Why Join Robotics?

"Why join robotics?" Any parent would ask this when their child comes home wanting to add yet another activity to their schedule.

We asked two Beckman graduates "If you were talking to a freshman parent, what would you say to convince them to let their child join robotics?"

"It doesn't matter if you are experienced with robots or not. A program like FIRST can only be beneficial to anybody involved in the program because it tests critical thinking, time management, and reasoning all in a time critical environment. For me, this became very beneficial as I carried the skills I learned from being involved in robotics to college. Being involved in my school’s robotics team was easily the most enjoyable and exciting extracurricular activity I have ever done."
Tim Hamamori - Class of 2008

"Your child will learn so much from the program. It's an amazing, beneficial experience all the way from kick off to the end of competition. It's definitely worth it and it helps with college apps."
David Hoxie - Class of 2010

Our current upper classmen team members felt that robotics gives them a sense of accomplishment; hands on applied learning; integrates theoretical and hands on knowledge; provides a challenge not available in the classroom; travel opportunities and being on a team representing their school.

The time commitment to the program is approximately 90 hours over the months of January through March after school and/or on weekends. Students can participate in the program either as a team member or as a member of the robotics class which earns them 5 units each year. Many of our team members are also active in Beckman's marching band, wind ensemble or orchestra and on the athletic teams of lacrosse, volleyball, basketball and swimming to name just a few.
